Cell phone woes

Okay, anybody have any opinions one way or the other on cell phones? I'm looking for a prepaid phone and I'm quite unhappy with the Tracfone/NetTen/Straight Talk triumvirate right now. Opinions welcome.

Surprisingly, Verizon has inexpensive phones and a few pre-paid packages. I have one of their phones that cost about 25 bucks, and the plan is about a dollar a day - I load it up when either B* or R* go out of town.
