Title: It Takes One, Part 2
Author: captsparrow4evr
Rating: PG-13 for now; R later
Characters: Aaron Hotchner, Dave Rossi, Derek Morgan, Spencer Reid – all “Criminal Minds”; Dexter Morgan – “Dexter”
Author’s note: Crossover fic between two of my favorite serial killer shows. One of those what-if things. If you’ve never watched Dexter or Criminal Minds, I highly recommend them both. If you have, I hope you enjoy this. Spoilers for Dexter S4; CM S6. I am writing this without seeing Dexter S5 so consider this AU from there.
Disclaimer: I own absolutely nothing related to CM or Dexter. A pity, that.

It Takes One, Part 2

Harry was wrong. I’d discovered that when I met Trinity. Hell, I’d known it, whether I’d acknowledged it or not, when I took the job at Miami Metro. I didn’t have to be alone—the lone wolf. Harry never factored in my affection for Deb and he would never have understood about Rita. And now, there was Astor, Cody and Harrison. The lone wolf has cubs to feed.

“But are you really the best person to be raising those kids?” Harry’s voice could be annoyingly persistent in my head.

Spencer’s voice washed over me as he analyzed the most recent crime scene. I didn’t need to pay attention to him for the most part. He was a nice kid and we liked talking shop—as if blood spatter and psychological torture were the same as pipe fittings and paint thinner. “I’m as good as anyone, and a lot better than some. They’re safe with me and Rita’s parents.”

“Are they?” I know Harry’s dead but there were times I really just wanted to shut him up. “Was Rita safe?”

“Don’t talk about her,” These emotions were a new experience for me. Yeah, I missed Harry but not the same way. Rita had given me a sense of what it was to be normal, not to mention three great kids, and I could never repay her for that. Our marriage had been rough but, from what I understand, even normal people get divorced.

“Morgan,” The name jerked me around but Hotch was speaking to Derek. That was something I had to get used to. Derek Morgan was a good cop—and that could spell trouble for me—and maybe for him.

“Sorry, Dexter,” Hotch said after speaking to Derek. “It slipped my mind that the two of you share the same last name. Care to give me a preview of your report?”

To be truthful, boss, no, because I’ve not been paying attention. “Sure. The lack of spatter pattern on the walls indicates either the victim was moved here after being killed elsewhere or the victim was already on the ground when the unsub killed her. Since there’s no blood trail and no evidence of clean-up, it’s probably the latter.”

“Lividity of the body backs Dex up,” Reid announced as he stepped closer. “No ligature marks, though. We’ll have to wait for toxicology to tell us if she was drugged or not.”

Hotchner sighed. “Mor-Derek’s on the phone with Garcia. She may have a lead for us.”

“Good,” I needed to buddy up to Garcia more. I still wasn’t sure if she and Derek were involved or not but they acted like it.

“How’s Rossi doing?” Spencer asked. I would have to be careful around Dr. Reid. Hanging around him was the greatest advantage I could have because he was so willing to share his thoughts on our cases. Yet he was very good at reading people so I couldn’t afford to slip up.

“He hasn’t had any luck,” Hotchner had a kid. A little boy named Jack. He was older than Harrison but younger than Cody. Still, they’d had a good time the one time we’d arranged a play-date for them. I could call Rita’s mom and have her arrange another one some time.

“When did you start thinking like that?!” Harry screamed in my head. It was all I could do to resist responding to him. Was this what schizophrenia was like? Maybe I could ask Spencer’s mom someday. Of course, then I might have to kill her.

The coroner was finally allowed to come in and remove the body. It was as they were lifting her that Spencer noticed something. I came in close, ostensibly to photograph what he’d found. “What’s wrong?”

Spencer shook his head then gently lifted the victim’s red dress. There, drawn on her stomach with red magic marker, was the iconic smiley face. I looked up at Reid and he spoke. “You know what this means, don’t you?”

I shook my head and snapped a few pictures of the drawing. “What?”

“We have to have a nice day,” Spencer deadpanned. For some reason, it didn’t seem all that funny.

Creepy. Give me the shivers in the best sort of way.

Love the librarian and slasher icons.

Good, good, that's what it's supposed to do. And thanks for the compliments on the icons. I didn't make them, unfortunately.

OK, now I understand why I was confused at first - two chars with the same last name. (I told you I don't watch "Dexter" *G*) I can't imagine Morgan being called Derek by anyone on that team, so I think Dex is going to have to bite the bullet and go by his first name.

I did like his observations about the (real, LOL) Morgan. He and Garcia either seem like an item or siblings - I tend to see it as the latter, myself. Also, Morgan is no dummy, despite being good-looking - I know there's that prejudice sometimes, and I notice it's been written into episodes a couple of times that someone underestimated him for that.

Interesting story so far. And the last line is classic socially-awkward Reid, LOL.

Thank you, love. Actually, the whole Derek Morgan/Dexter Morgan issue will probably crop up in some form or another throughout this tale. Since Dexter really is "Dexter", I don't think he'll have an issue going by his first name. That will let Morgan be "Morgan."

As for Dexter's reaction to Derek, it's good to know that during the first season of Dexter, there was a black cop named Doakes who hated Dexter and was wildly suspicious of him. Dexter kidnapped Doakes but his crazy AA sponsor Lila actually killed him by setting the shed he was being held in on fire. Dexter definitely isn't going to underestimate Derek.

Garcia and Morgan are really more like family but Dexter has issues with seeing those kinds of relationships. In one of the last episodes of last season, when two of the characters decided abruptly to get married, he had no clue anything was going on even though everyone else knew that they were involved.

Glad to know you're still with me. And, yeah, poor Reid has some issues himself.

I just finally got around to reading this. You'd think I would have sooner because I love CM and Dexter.

Why is it that the first thing I thought was that Derek and Dexter would be getting confused? :D

This is fantastic so far. I just love how Dexter is swearing as he's surrounded by profilers.

Sometimes, the best way to hide is to stand in the middle of an empty room, wave your arms and shout "I'm here!" I personally have no clue where this story is going but I want to keep the Dexter black humor going.

That is true. I'm sure he'll find someway. He can trick everyone else (Well, minus Doakes. Poor Doakes.) so I think he can manage for the time being.

I don't care if this has no plot. I love black humor, so keep it coming! :D
